“…Detainees with prior arrest histories for rape, molestation and analogous sexual violations were signifi cantly more likely to engage in sexual misconduct, generalised misconduct, and total misconduct reviewed by the parole board at two points of recall than those without antisocial sexual histories. In addition, both offi cial and self-reported histories of delinquency were consistently related to institutional misconduct, suggesting considerable support for the importation model of inmate behaviour (Irwin and Cressey, 1962) and related research (Cao et al, 1997;Gendreau et al, 1997;Gaes et al, 2002;DeLisi, 2003;Berg and DeLisi, 2006;Walters, 2007). The ROC and regression analyses indicated that at least part of the origins of adolescent sex offending is rooted in thought psychopathology.…”

“…Prior research consistently indicates that non-Whites, males and young inmates are more likely to amass records of institutional misconduct than Whites, females and older offenders (Wooldredge, 1991;Harer and Steffensmeier, 1996;Hochstetler and DeLisi, 2005;Berg and DeLisi, 2006;Walters, 2007). The relationships between race/ethnicity, gender and inmate misconduct are equivocal because of evidence for differential enforcement by correctional staff.…”

“…In a multi-level analysis of BOP data, Camp et al (2003) found that Mexican citizenship was related to violent behavior in prison, but found that race-Black was not. Recent analyses relying on data from a southwestern state prison system found higher rates of serious rule violations and assaults among Native Americans and Hispanics, but not among Blacks (Berg & DeLisi, 2006;Griffin & Hepburn, 2006). Studies relying on self-report data from the nationally representative Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities, however, consistently found a relationship between race-Black and the commission of violent acts in prison (Huebner, 2003;Jiang et al, 2005;Steiner & Wooldredge, 2008).…”

“…Goffman (1961) and Sykes (1958) emphasized the later type of adaptation (cooperation). Much of the literature which tested the deprivation model of inmate adaptation examined the former mode of adaptation (i.e., violence and prison disturbances) (for example, Berg & DeLisi, 2006;Cao, Zhao, & Van Dine, 1997;Ellis, Grasmick, & Gilman, 1974;Hochstetler & DeLisi, 2005;Jiang & Fisher-Giorlando, 2002;McCorkle, Miethe, & Drass, 1995). Suicide as a form of (mal-)adaptation has received less attention.…”
