Increasing competition has emphasized the need for creating and using more effective strategies at the level of SMEs to achieve competitive advantage. SMEs face higher risks in terms of the globalization due to the limited resources as well as size. The objective of the study was to examine the determinants of risk management with an emphasis on the sector specifics of SMEs in the V4 countries. This enables the quantification of sectoral differences in relation to the socioeconomic determinants. The research sample included 1585 SMEs from the V4 countries. The data obtained from SME managers and owners were processed using the descriptive statistics and logistic regression. The results of the analyses confirm the existence of differences across SMEs concerning the risk management, which are determined by the country in which a given company operates, industry, gender and age of its manager or the owner of the company. The results of the study provide a valuable platform for the development of systems to measure and assess business risks in companies and to set up training systems. It will also enhance the development of international and national benchmarking indicators and the creation of international databases for comparative analyses.

The effective activity of road transport enterprises depends on the chosen strategy of enterprise management. The urgent role is the effectiveness of the use of a risk-oriented approach to the management and planning of the enterprise. The article, using the method of hierarchy analysis and probabilistic method, identifies and determines the contribution of risks. The factors that form the risks of road transport enterprises’ activities are defined for these types of enterprises. It has been found that the application of the hierarchy analysis method is a more time-consuming process and provides a deeper analysis of each risk. The probabilistic method is easier to apply, but it requires a high qualification of experts who will assess the risks. The results of surveys conducted by road transport enterprises indicate the application of elements of a risk-oriented approach. The availability of risk information makes it possible to implement appropriate precautions not only within an individual enterprise, but also on a more global scale.

The paper aims to provide a summary of the risk management tools suitable for use by small enterprises, thru the use of a bibliometric analysis and a systematic review. The tools term was used in order to encapsulate all the models, methodologies and techniques encountered in the review process. The initial data set utilized is comprised of 243 papers for the bibliometric analysis, with only 30 articles being taken into consideration for the systematic review. The papers considered for the review fall into the Pareto distribution, accounting for approximately 80% of the total citations. The usefulness of the paper resides in the synthesized presentation of the tools discovered, providing a potential guide, for managers or business owners of small enterprises, in the research for risk management tools that could be implemented.
