The Dark Side of Antibiotics: Adverse Effects on the Infant Immune Defense Against Infection

Abstract: Although antibiotics confer significant health benefits in treating or preventing bacterial infections, an accumulating wealth of evidence illustrates their detrimental effect on host-microbiota homeostasis, posing a serious menace to the global public health. In recent years, it is becoming evident that infants, who are subjected to frequent antibiotic exposures due to their vulnerability to infection, reflect increased susceptibility to a wide spectrum of diseases, including infection, in later life. Antibio… Show more

“…However, HAEC remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in infants with HD, and more than half of HAEC episodes occur within the first year of an operation. 6 Therefore, we initiated empirical treatment of antibiotics early in our patient.…”

“…Without clear systemic markers of antibiotic effects on anti-tumor immunity, the use of antibiotics in cancer patients undergoing immunotherapy presents a clinical conundrum. Although antibiotics have been linked to numerous adverse events, including allergic reactions, gastrointestinal toxicity, drug–drug interactions, development of antimicrobial resistance, tendinopathies, and rupture, and bleeding due to effects on colonic bacteria vitamin K production [ 56 , 57 , 58 ], antibiotic overuse remains prevalent. Indeed, it is estimated that at least 30% of patients with the common cold are provided with antibiotic prescriptions in the U.S., an unnecessary practice [ 59 ].…”
