The degradation of diethyl phthalate (DEP) during ozonation: oxidation by-products study

Abstract: The degradation of diethyl phthalate (DEP) in an aqueous solution during ozonation was investigated by identifying the oxidation intermediates using GC-MS. The experiments were carried out in semi-batch mode with a 1.5 mg l 21-min ozone dose. The proposed degradation pathways were divided into hydrolysis of the aliphatic chain (pathway (A)) and hydroxylation resulting from zOH attack in the aromatic ring (pathway (B)). With increasing ozone dose, the aromatic ring of DEP was opened and acidic compounds, such a… Show more

“…Figure 3 shows that the COD decreased gradually during the initial O3 and O3/H2O2 processes due to the availability of OH radicals. Further, an increase in COD concentration was observed at 60 min (except for the O3 treatment alone), indicating the formation of organic acids during DEP degradation by AOP [13]. As the peroxone treatment continued, COD decreased further due to additional oxidation of the intermediates by OH radicals to the final COD.…”

“…During the ozonation treatment, the pH gradually decreased from 7.5 to 5.1 with time and with the addition of H 2 O 2 . Alkaline pH enhances the formation of OH radicals as more hydroxide ions are present (Equations (12) and (13)). These hydroxide ions initiate O 3 decay.…”

“…In previous studies, electron density distribution of chemicals has been used to find the initial positions of OH radical attack in oxidation (Watanabe et al, 2003;Jung et al, 2010;Heimstad et al, 2009). A higher electron density indicates more electrons in the bonds, resulting in electrophilic reaction (Horikoshi et al, 2004;Kaneco et al, 2006).…”

“…Based on the elution patterns of DMP-1 and DMP-2, the peaks at retention times of 21.50 and 23.93 min were identified as diethyl 3-hydroxyphthalate (DEP-1) (Fig. These mono-and dihydroxylated derivatives were also detected as ozonation transformation products of DEP (Jung et al 2010). S1d), respectively.…”
