The desaturation and elongation of 14C-labelled polyunsaturated fatty acids by pike (Esox lucius L.) in vivo

Abstract: To examine the ability of pike (Esox lucius L.) to modify exogenous PUFA by desaturation and elongation, (14)C-labelled 18:2(n-6), 18:3(n-3), 20:4(n-6) and 20:5(n-3) were injected intraperitoneally and the distribution of radioactivity in tissue lipid classes and liver PUFA measured. In all tissues examined, radioactivity from all (14)C-PUFA was recovered in many classes of acyl lipids and the level of recovery generally reflected the relative abundance of the lipid classes. Triacylglycerols, CGP and EGP usual… Show more

“…The patterns of lipid classes found in reared pike larvae are similar to those found in wild pike Iarvac (Desvilettes et al 1994a) and in adult pike (Henderson et al 1995). Polar lipids are the most important lipid class detected, followed by sterols or triacylglycerols (TAG), sterol esters and free fatty acids.…”

“…E. serrulatus, Chydoridae and Bosminidae contain significant levels of 20:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3) which might be beneficial for development in pike (Desvilettes et al 1994a;Henderson et al 1995). Like other freshwater insect nymphs (Bell et al 1994), chironomids contain highcr levels of 18:2(n-6) and 18:3(n-3) but considerably less 22:6(n-3) than do zooplankton.…”

“…Fatty acids were converted to methyl esters by transmethylation in methanol containing 2 % sulphuric acid for 16 h at 50°C. Fatty acid methyl esters and fatty alcohol acetates were analysed by gas-liquid chromatography essentially as above and as detailed by Henderson et al (1995).…”
