“…Further, several studies within the last few years have supported the assumption that LD children have difficulty regulating (i.e., accessing and coordinating) a number of mental activities. The research in this area may be summarized as follows: LD children experience difficulty with such selfregulating mechanisms as checking, planning, monitoring, testing, revising, and evaluating during an attempt to learn or solve problems (e.g., Bauer, in press;Barclay & Hagen, 1982;Brown & Palincsar, 1982;Hallahan, Lloyd, Kosiewicz, Kaufman, & Graves, 1979;McKinney & Haskins, 1980;Scruggs, Mastropieri, & Levin, in press;Swanson, 1984b;Wong, in press). Such children perform poorly on a variety of tasks that require the use of general control processes or strategies for solution (e.g., Bauer, 1979Bauer, , 1982Bauer & Emhert, 1984;Brainerd, Kingman, & Howe, 1986;Dallego & Moely, 1980;Howe, Brainerd, & Kingma, 1985;Tarver, Hallahan, Kaufman, & Ball, 1976; also see Bauer, in press;Worden, 1983, for review).…”
