The Development of Motor Abilities of Young Athletes and Gymnasts in the Initial Preparation Phase

Abstract: The aim of this study is to determine the effect of sports gymnastics and athletics training on the development of athletes’ motor abilities in the initial preparation phase. The study was conducted on a sample of 81 girls and boys of about 9 years of age, who train athletics (N=34) and gymnastics (N=47). A total of 9 variables were observed, three to assess anthropometric characteristics (body height, body mass and the body mass index) and 6 to assess the participants’ motor abilities (explosive leg power, re… Show more

“…The most important of these are strength, speed, flexibility, coordination, as well as the harmony of movements and musicality. Specialists [13,36,37] agree that a high level of physical fitness is necessary to obtain a sports result, and this is a very difficult task and an integral part of the preparation process in almost all sports, especially in sports with complex coordination of movements. They also point out that modern sport and its development trends necessitate continuous improvement of all factors affecting the result.…”

“…To keep up with the trends in the development of the sport, gymnasts are forced to make incredible efforts to achieve a competitive sports result. Hard work on improving technical skills and physical fitness is the main direction in the preparation of athletes [11,28,37]. In gymnastics, without the proper level of physical fitness, it is impossible to achieve results in the training and competitive process [36,38].…”

“…Therefore, the ability of RGs to hold well-defined balance positions and maintain them for a minimum period of time so that judges can make an adequate assessment of them is a decisive factor for success in this sport (Palomares et al, 2019). That is why it is very important to develop this motor ability, especially in girls of younger school age, when the pace of balance development is the most intense (Penčić, 2014;Dobrijević et al, 2016). In addition, numerous studies have compared balance ability among athletes in different sports, and the highest level of this ability was recorded precisely in RGs (Bressel et al, 2007;Hrysomallis, 2011;Shahheidari et al, 2012), which is not a surprise considering that a significant part of training in RG derives from classical ballet exercises, and ballet is 'crowned' with supreme balance (Prochazkova et al, 2014).…”
