The Development of Naphtol AS Dyes

Abstract: The history and the development of azoic dyes baaed on the arylamides of o‐hydroxycarboxylic acids are reviewed. The relation between the chemical constitution of an azoio dye and its substantivity on cellulose is discussed, and the paper concludes with an account of stabilised diazo components.

“…The concentrations in the solution are expressed i n mol/l and in the fibre in mollkg [41.Eqn 2 will be linear if pH remains constant during dyeing and if other ions, except those deriving from the dissociation of the dye and the acid, are not present in the dyeing system.Plotting the equilibrium values of l/[Df] against [H,]/LD,]for a series of dyeings on acrylic fibres with different basic dyes, we obtained straight lines, the coefficients of which enabled the ciyeing equilibrium constant, K H , t o be calculated. From K H , the affinity of the dye for the acrylic fibre can be obtained[7…”
