The Diezma landslide (A-92 motorway, Southern Spain): history and potential for future reactivation

Abstract: A complete failure analysis of a complex landslide located in Southern Spain (the Diezma landslide) has been undertaken using geotechnical, geophysical and geological data. The triggering factors were a high groundwater level and the reduction in the shear strength parameters of the high-plasticity clay. The 2010 reactivation of the landslide was related to the poor performance of the first line of deep drainage wells, although the second and third line of wells and the anchored pile barrier were effective in … Show more

“…The Diezma landslide is located 25 km from the city of Granada (Fig. 1); although the slope had repeatedly suffered small scale stability problems since the construction of the A-92 highway, a larger failure occurred on 18 March 2001 causing several damages (Rodríguez-Peces et al 2011;Delgado et al 2015). The landslide has a main translational mechanism and involves an estimated volume of 1.2 Mm 3 , constituted of a chaotic deposit of silt and clay with heterometric blocks of limestones (Azañón et al 2010).…”

“…The Diezma landslide is located in a moderate-relief area of the central sector of the Betic Cordillera (SE Spain), close to the village of Diezma (Figure 1). This area, which is located at the boundary between the external (South Iberian Domain) and internal zones (Alborán Domain) of the Betic Cordillera, is affected by landslides of variable sizes and types, most of which probably represent reactivated ancient failures [11,32,33].…”

“…The marl composing the tongue Engineering Geology of Granada revealed a high proportion of expansive clay. The repair of the highway took more than 1 month until the traffic was fully restored (Rodríguez-Peces et al, 2011).…”
