The Distribution of Some Enzyme Group Systems Among Marathis and Gujaratis in Bombay

Abstract: The distribution of electrophoretic variants in 8 red cell enzyme systems, representing 10 independent gene loci, has been examined in a large series of Marathi and Gujarati blood samples from Bombay. In the acid phosphatase system no PHsc genes were detected in Marathis and the frequency of PHsc in Gujaratis was only 0.004. The PHsB frequencies were 0.72 and 0.71 respectively. For 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase the PGDA frequencies were 0.97 and 0.98: a single case of the ‘Richmond’ variant was found in Guj… Show more

“…Among the Gujarati and Marathi-speaking persons sampled in Bombay, Blake et al [1970] found AK2 frequencies of 0.1115 and 0.0909, respectively. The Parsis have a slightly lower AK2 frequency of 0.0670 and in the small series of Iranis the frequency of AK2 is only 0.0208.…”

“…The situation in India, however, is different and a distinctive LDH variant 'Calcutta-1' is found commonly with frequencies of 1-4% [D as et al, 1970a, b;Blake et al, 1970Blake et al, , 1972, 'Calcutta-1' represents the heterozygote for an LDH A subunit mutation, and a single case of the homozygote combination LDHCa^/LD//Cal-l has been observed in a 19-year-old girl in Tamilnadu [A n a n th a k r ish n a n et al., 1970]. In the present survey LDH 'Calcutta-1' was present among the Parsis with a frequency of 3.6% but no example was observed among the 48 Iranis examined.…”

“…Acid Phosphatase Three alleles, PHsA, PHs& and PHsc have been reported previously in Indian populations, the commonest being PHsB and PHsA [A n a n th a k r ishnan and K ir k . 1969; Blake et al, 1970;D as el al., 1970a]. H opk in so n [1968] quotes unpublished results for 222 Indians sampled in England giving a PHsc frequency of 0.02, but investigations by our own group so far have not been able to confirm this value.…”

“…Das et al (1970) first reported Calcutta-1 (Cal-1), an LDH variant at the A locus. Later it was discovered in 1-4~ of the population of India (Das et al, 1970;Blake et al, 1970;Ananthakrishnan et al, 1970). Madras-I, an LDH variant at the B locus has been found only in Madras city.…”
