The diurnal change in the vertical distribution of atmospheric 222Rn due to the growth and rise of the stable stratification height in the atmospheric boundary layer

We measured simultaneously radon concentration in the atmosphere at Donghae, Oki Island and Matsue. In Donghae, radon concentration had peaks in the winter and summer and lower values in the spring. It was the highest in the winter and lowest in the summer in Oki Island, in Matsue, the highest in the fall and lowest in the summer. The timing and frequency of arrival air mass from the ocean and the land were different among the three measuring points.The highest values in Donghae and Oki Island were because of effects of radon flow from Eurasian continent in the winter. The inversion layer often formed in the atmospheric boundary layer over the land area around the Sea of Japan caused the peak values in the summer in Donghae. The atmosphere over Oki Island is always mixed with that over the ocean because the island is small. Radon escaping from the ground of the island does not stay with the surface layer even at night; therefore, diurnal variation was almost none throughout the year. Air mass with low radon concentration coming from the Pacific Ocean caused the lowest values in the summer. In Matsue, the peak was found in the fall in which occurrences of surface inversion layer is most common in the year.

The observation network of atmospheric radon-222 ( 222 Rn) concentration established in East Asia region is introduced, and the characteristics of the observations at two continental sites Beijing and Seoul and three remote sites Cape Ochiishi, Hachijo Is. and Hateruma Is. are discussed in this paper. Higher levels of 222 Rn concentrations with typical diurnal variation with early morning maxima were observed on the continent, and lower levels with no diurnal variation at remote islands. Seasonal variations with summer minima and winter maxima were commonly obtained at all five observatories, and they suggested contribution of 222 Rn originated from the continent to atmospheric 222 Rn over the remote islands isolated in the ocean. A backward trajectory analysis showed clear relationship between variation in wind field and in 222 Rn concentration at Hachijo Is., and proved availability of the observation for analysis of atmospheric transport in East Asia.
