“…In spite of the great interest in this archipelago, the information available about its meiofauna is mostly taxonomic (Gerlach 1961, 1962, 1963a,b, 1964; De Zio Grimaldi et al. 1999; Gallo et al. 2007).…”

“…The Maldive Islands form the central part of the Chagos-Maldives-Laccadive ridge in the Central Indian Ocean and comprise some of the most characteristic and signifi-cant atoll systems (Risk & Sluka 2000); their back-reef platforms consist entirely of carbonate sediments, unlike those of the Pacific Atolls. In spite of the great interest in this archipelago, the information available about its meiofauna is mostly taxonomic (Gerlach 1961(Gerlach , 1962(Gerlach , 1963a(Gerlach ,b, 1964De Zio Grimaldi et al 1999;Gallo et al 2007). For these reasons, a study of the meiofaunal and nematode assemblages from three Maldivian back-reef sandy platforms was conducted.…”

“…Similar numbers of species and percentages of new species were found by Gallo et al . () in previously unsampled intertidal sand from the Seychelles. In the same study, the authors found a richer assemblage of marine tardigrades in the subtidal sediments of the Maldives (25 species) but, with a lower percentage of new species (Gallo et al ., ).…”

“…Two species are currently recognized in the genus Orzeliscus: O. belopus du Bois-Reymond Marcus, 1952and O. septentrionalis Schulz, 1953(see Guidetti and van der Land, 2016. The former is a semi-cosmopolitan species, and recorded from the Brazilian Atlantic coast (Du Bois-Reymond Marcus, 1952), the Northeast Atlantic coasts (Renaud-Debyser, 1963;Pollock, 1971;Renaud-Mornant and Gourbault, 1980;Lampard, 1986), New Caledonia Island (Renaud-Mornant, 1967), the Caribbean Sea (Pollock, 1982;Renaud-Mornant and Gourbault, 1984), the Mediterranean Sea (Grimaldi de Zio et al, 1983, 2003, and the Indian Ocean (Gallo et al, 2007). Orzeliscus septentrionalis was recorded from the North Sea (Schulz, 1953) and the Irish Sea (Moore, 1979), and in times past, regarded as a junior synonym of O. belopus (see Pollock, 1982) or treated as a species inquirenda (Guidetti and Bertolani, 2005).…”
