The Docker Ecosystem Needs Consolidation

Abstract: Docker provides a good basis to run composite applications in the cloud, especially if those are not cloudaware, or cloud-native. However, Docker concentrates on managing containers on one host, but SaaS providers need a container management solution for multiple hosts. Therefore, a number of tools emerged that claim to solve the problem. This paper classifies the solutions, maps them to requirements from a case study and identifies gaps and integration requirements. We conclude that the Docker ecosystem could… Show more

“…Microservices can be deployed on containers in different configurations, ie, one microservice per container, multiple microservices sharing same container, or single microservice spanning multiple containers . A detailed study on the different platforms has been presented by Peinl and Holzschuher and Rodriguez and Buyya . The major platforms are Apache Mesos Marathon, Amazon ECS, Docker Swarm, Google Kubernetes (earlier Google Borg), and Hashicorp Nomad. The container management platforms enable spawning containers across multiple hosts connected to form a cluster.…”

“…Typical operating systems used in cloud computing are often Linux/Unix systems, but arbitrary operating systems are possible. There are some Linux based OS like CoreOS or Atomic especially configured for providing only container runtime environments (see [39] for more), but machines on Layer 3 can be used as all purpose nodes. However, there is a trend to use container technologies to simplify deploying and minimize incompatibilities of different applications running on the same host.…”

“…However, there is a trend to use container technologies to simplify deploying and minimize incompatibilities of different applications running on the same host. Container solutions, notably Docker [39], provide a self-contained standard runtime, image format, and build system for operating system containers deployable to any Layer 3 machine. The open container initiative (OCI, [40]) is an open governance structure with the purpose of creating open industry standards around container formats and runtime environments focusing this layer.…”
