The dressed mobile atoms and ions

Abstract: We consider free atoms and ions in R 3 interacting with the quantized electromagnetic field. Because of the translation invariance we consider the reduced hamiltonian associated with the total momentum. After introducing an ultraviolet cutoff we prove that the reduced hamiltonian for atoms has a ground state if the coupling constant and the total momentum are sufficiently small. In the case of ions an extra infrared regularization is needed. We also consider the case of the hydrogen atom in a constant magnetic… Show more

“…2. Our result extends to the Pauli-Fierz model describing dressed mobile atoms and ions (see [1,2,15]), replacing the condition E g (P 3 ) = 0 in the theorem by Q∇E g (P ) = 0, where Q is the total charge of the atomic system, and E g (P ) is the infimum of the spectrum of the reduced Hamiltonian H g (P ) at a fixed total momentum P .…”

“…The electrostatic potential is denoted by V (x ). The quantized electromagnetic field in the Coulomb gauge is defined by (2), where ρ is a real ultraviolet cutoff function satisfying (3), 1 (k) and 2 (k) are polarization vectors orthogonal to each other and to k, and a * λ (k) and a λ (k) are the usual creation and annihilation operators obeying the canonical commutation relations (5). The Pauli Hamiltonian H g associated to the system we consider acts on H el ⊗ H ph , where H el = L 2 (R 3 × Z 2 ) is the Hilbert space for the electron, and H ph is the symmetric Fock space constructed over L 2 (R 3 × Z 2 ) for the photons.…”
