The Dual Role of MicroRNAs in Colorectal Cancer Progression

Abstract: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is responsible for one of the major cancer incidence and mortality worldwide. It is well known that MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play vital roles in maintaining the cell development and other physiological processes, as well as, the aberrant expression of numerous miRNAs involved in CRC progression. MiRNAs are a class of small, endogenous, non-coding, single-stranded RNAs that bind to the 3’-untranslated region (3′-UTR) complementary sequences of their target mRNA, resulting in mRNA degradation o… Show more

“…In addition, microRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous single-stranded non-coding RNAs with a size of 20-24 nt which specifically bind to the 3'-untranslated region (3 -UTR) of the target mRNA to induce degradation of the target mRNA or inhibit its protein translation process [166]. Studies found that multiple abnormally expressed miRNAs in BC directly target CDK and participate in the regulation of tumor progression.…”

“…MiRNA has been shown to play an important role in cancer predictors and therapeutic targets. 19,20 Expression of miR-183-5p has been shown to be associated with the growth and progression of cancer through multiple mechanisms. [21][22][23][24] EMT is a major process to regulate cell migration and invasion.…”

“…17,18 Thus, identifying miRNAs and further inferring miRNA functions have become an important strategy in understanding physio-pathological processes, and their roles in cancer predictors and therapeutic targets. 19,20 Expressions of miRNAs, such as miR-183-5p, have been shown to be associated with the growth and progression of cancer through multiple mechanisms. [21][22][23][24] The inhibition of miR-183-5p significantly abolished the effects of tripartite motifcontaining protein 65 (TRIM65), a critical regulator of a variety of cellular processes and tumor progression, on autophagy and cisplatin-induced apoptosis suggesting a critical role of miR-183-5p in mediating the TRIM65regulated autophagy and cisplatin resistance in human lung cancer A549/DDP cells.…”

“…As a class of short (~ 22 nt) non-coding RNAs, microRNAs (miRNAs) also signi cantly contribute to CRC progression and development (12). Up to now, accumulating articles indicated that lncRNAs located in the cytoplasm always function as molecular sponges to compete miRNAs in a sequence-speci c manner (13).…”
