The ecology of MIS research: a twenty year status review

Abstract: The debate concerning the legitimacy of MIS as a field of research has endured over the last decade. The absence of theories and lack of a cumulative research tradition have been areas of particular concern. The research reported in this article provides evidence on these important issues. The study systematically analyzed MIS articles in seven core journals over the period . The resulting database, consisting of 792 articles, was analyzed for themes and topics, and on the basis of type of article (empirical/n… Show more

“…Because the theory arises from particular needs, action research is a fi ne theory discovery method. This is a very important characteristic of action research, since the theoretical progress of IS research is alarmingly slow (Alavi et al, 1989). Like other scientifi c methods, further testing and even cross-method triangulation must generalize by confi rming or falsifying any causal links suggested by action research theories.…”

“…On the whole, this literature can be characterized as diverse and pluralistic (King, Myers, Rivard, Saunders, & Weber, 2010, have called this "harmonious pluralism"). Whether such diversity is considered a blessing (Robey, 1996) or a curse (Benbasat & Weber, 1996), it is widely accepted as a hallmark of the field (Alavi, Carlson, & Brooke, 1989;Banville & Landry, 1989;Cooper, 1988;Grover, forthcoming;Hirschheim & Klein, 2003;Keen, 1991;King & Lyytinen, 2006;Klein & Hirschheim, 2008;Markus, 1997;Orlikowski & Baroudi, 1991;Swanson & Ramiller, 1993).…”

“…For instance, Alavi, Carlson, and Brooke (1989) used keyword analysis of IS journals' TOCs as part of a larger study of IS literature. Content guides have also been used in the field of document analysis, where software algorithms analyze TOCs of literature for the purpose of automated analysis (Belaid, 2001;Kwon & Park, 2007;Lin & Xiong, 2006).…”
