The Effect of Alkali Treatment on Dielectric Properties ofRoystonea regia/Epoxy Composites

Abstract: The present study investigates the electrical conductivity and dielectric properties of untreated and alkali-treated Roystonea regia natural fiber-reinforced epoxy composites at different frequencies along with compression and water absorption properties. Fiber was treated with 5% NaOH and characterized by chemical, thermogravimetric, tensile test, and SEM methods before and after alkali treatment. The interface between matrix and fiber was studied by SEM. Conductivity of alkali-treated fiber composites is low… Show more

“…To provide better adhesion between the fiber surface and matrix for obtaining improved mechanical properties, the composites were prepared with chemically treated fibers. [8][9][10] Hybrid composites contain more than one fiber or one resin system in a composite laminate. Two or more different fibers used in the same ply are called intra-ply hybrid composite, which possess the combined properties of both fibers.…”

“…Impact strength of neat UPR is 151 J/m 2 which is very less than the fiber composites. Fibers play a vital role in impact strength of the composites as they act as stress‐transferring medium and resist crack formation . SEM images of SMFs before alkali treatment show that the surface of fiber is covered with a layer of substance, which may include pectin, lignin, and other impurities.…”
