The Effect of an Artificial Tear Combining Hyaluronic Acid and Tamarind Seeds Polysaccharide in Patients with Moderate Dry Eye Syndrome: A New Treatment for Dry Eye

Abstract: Based on the results of this clinical trial, the combination of HA and TS-polysaccharide appears to be effective in improving the symptoms of dry eye, opening new scenarios in possible treatment of the disease by combining different molecules.

“…11,[19][20][21][22] In this study, we applied a well-known questionnaire, the OSDI, one of the most common and preferred tests in practice for the grading of DED severity to our subjects. [23][24][25] We showed that the lower tear meniscus measurements (TMH, TMD, TMA) are well correlated with the OSDI score. Severe DED patients had low TMD, TMA, and TMH values and high OSDI score.…”

“…We assessed four (9%) trials at low risk of performance bias for masking participants and trial personnel, but unclear risk of detection bias for not reporting whether outcome assessors were masked (Barabino 2014; Grene 1992; Simmons 2015a; Simmons 2015b). We assessed three (7%) trials at high risk of performance bias for lack of masking participants and trial personnel, but unclear risk of detection bias for not reporting whether outcome assessors were masked (Boisjoly 2003; Brignole 2005; Pinto-Bonilla 2015).…”

“…A polysaccharide derived from tamarind seeds has shown to be equally effective to HPMC, sodium hyaluronate, and sodium polyacrylate in the form of eyedrops in rabbit model as well as in clinical settings (Burgalassi et al 1999 ;Rolando and Valente 2007 ). Synergistic interactions between hyaluronic acid (HA) and tamarind seed polysaccharide due to its mucoadhesive properties have been demonstrated by means of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score in patients (Barabino et al 2014 ;Uccello-Barretta et al 2010 ). Another polysaccharide, galactomannan from natural gums is recently patented for use in one of the formulations for dry eye (Hong and Meadow 2009 ).…”
