The Effect of Butin on the Vitiligo Mouse Model Induced by Hydroquinone

Abstract: Vernonia anthelmintica (L.) Willd has been traditionally used in the treatment of vitiligo in Uyghur medicine. This study used butin, the main component of V. anthelmintica, to study the influence on hydroquinone-induced vitiligo in mice. The animals were randomly divided into six groups: control, model, 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP, 4.25 mg/kg), and butin (0.425, 4.25, and 42.5 mg/kg) groups. The number of melanin-containing hair follicles, basal layer melanocytes, melanin-containing epidermal cells, the expressi… Show more

“…TUM has been successfully used for the treatment of vitiligo in China, particularly Vernonia anthelmintica (L.). It has been reported that Vernonia anthelmintica (L.) injection has a significant therapeutic effect on vitiligo [ 26 ]. Moreover, the ethanol extract from Vernonia anthelmintica (L.) has been identified to enhance melanin synthesis by activating the p38 MAPK signaling pathway in B16F10 cells and primary melanocytes [ 27 , 28 ].…”

“…Our results indicate that CWT activates the PKA signaling pathway via the accumulation of cAMP content, stimulating CREB, leading to the triggering of MITF transcription. MITF upregulates melanogenic genes, including TYR, TRP 1, and TRP 2. e experimental animal models, using mice and guinea pigs, were chosen based on previous validation of the methods [29][30][31]. Hydroquinone was used to induce vitiligo in C57BL mice.…”

“…The dorsal side of the animals was shaved a day before the experiment using electric clippers. As previously described, dorsal hypopigmentation in the mice was induced by H.Q 17 . Brie y, each mouse's 2 cm × 2 cm depilated region was smeared with 0.5 ml 5% H.Q.…”
