The Effect of Differentiation Grade of Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma on Excision Margins, Local Recurrence, Metastasis, and Patient Survival

Abstract: Studies that investigated the relationship between SCC differentiation grade and patient survival are scarce and inconsistent. The present study indicates tumor differentiation grade is an independent prognostic factor for OS. This finding suggests poor differentiation of cutaneous SCC alone is sufficient to upstage the primary tumor in the TNM classification system.

“…Because nuclei are always stained with much larger intensity, either in comparison with the rest of the cell or with the extracellular matrix, thresholding invariably segregate the images of nuclei, leaving the rest of the image in a background mode [2,[5][6][7]. While we know that basal cell carcinoma is comparatively relatively benign, management of squamous cell carcinoma is always controversial because of its potential to recur and intraoperative dilemma regarding choice of the margin or the depth for the excision [8][9][10][11][12][13]. We provide evidence here that progressive nuclear dysplasia may be automatically estimated through the thresholded images of skin cancer and quantitative parameters estimated to provide a quasiquantitative data, which can thenceforth guide the management of the particular cancer.…”
