The Effect of Ferric Chloride on Superficial Bleeding

Abstract: Background:Controlling superficial bleeding, despite all the progress in surgical science, is still a challenge in some settings. Objectives:This study assesses the hemostatic effects of ferric chloride and compares it with the standard method (suturing technique) to control superficial bleeding.Materials and Methods:In this animal model study, 60 male Wistar rats were used. An incision, 2 cm long and 0.5 cm deep was made on rat skin and the hemostasis time was recorded using ferric chloride at different concen… Show more

“…Cotton swabs can be used to absorb the bleeding, but alternatively, ferric chloride solution can be applied. Ferric chloride has a hemostatic effect 18 , and also triggers the stiffening of neck muscles around the incision site, thus helping to obtain correct insertion of the needle into the CM. Ferric chloride also dries out the skull and dural membrane, presenting better surfaces for adhesion of the cannula.…”

“…In this study, viscosity and acidity of Carnoy 0 s solution varied according to the presence of chloroform, with increasing viscosity in the order Carnoy 0 s solution without chloroform, water and Carnoy 0 s solution with chloroform, in addition to a discrete increase of pH. Such pH values obtained may be explained by the presence of acetic acid, chloroform, [19,34] and ferric chloride [35] in composition. All of these components present acid feature when isolated.…”

“…By the contrary of further known hemostatic agents, ferric chloride displays its effects through the chemical reaction with blood, regardless the action of normal hemostatic system. As most topical hemostatic agents are employed to control superficial bleeding, requiring normal hemostatic functions to achieve the effects, the addition of a local hemostatic agent that exempts the need for a normal hemostatic system may indeed improve the coagulative effect …”

“…The spectra of the Carnoy solutions were superimposed on graphs that were quite similar. The region between 2,500 cm -1 and 3,500 cm -1 was the one with the greatest variation since the variations between the peaks in the the Gaussian and Lorentzian method to determine the characterization and deconvolution of the graphs (Nouri et al, 2015).…”
