The Effect of Gaseous Ozone in Infected Root Canal

Abstract: OBJECTIVES: During the treatment of chronic apical periodontitis and pulp necrosis the main role is to irrigate the root canal. AIM:The aim of this in vivo study was to irrigate with 0.9% NaCl (Natrium Chloride), 2.5 % NaOCl (Sodium Hypochlorite Solution, Sigma Aldrich -Germany) and 2% CHX (Chlorhexidine Digluconate Solution, Sigma Aldrich -Spain) combined with Gaseous Ozone (Prozone WH, Austria). MATERIAL AND METHODS:This study was realised in the University Dentistry Clinical Centre of Kosovo (UDCCK), respec… Show more

“…The main reason for rejection of the articles was the tested groups that did not match the Effect of ozone therapy in root canal disinfection Silva et al inclusion criteria. After a comprehensive reading, three studies were excluded due to the absence of control groups (Halbauer et al 2013, Ajeti et al 2018) and performance of inhibition zones (Anand et al 2015). Therefore, a total of eight studies were selected for the systematic review.…”

“…In optimal doses, ozone can react with blood components and affect positively oxygen metabolism and cell energy, activating antioxidant defense systems (Bocci, 2004). In dentistry, ozone therapy has been used to treat caries (Lim and Ngeow, 2017), endodontic (Ajeti et al, 2018) and periodontal diseases (Walker et al, 1995), and temporomandibular joint dysfunction (Dray, 1995;Domb, 2014). Moreover, this therapy has been used during maxillofacial surgery to promote hemostasis, enhance local oxygen supply (Bianco et al, 2019), and minimize postoperative discomfort (Wang et al, 2018).…”

“…Among all the desirable characteristics of an endodontic irrigant, it is the only one that can dissolve organic matter. For this reason, it continues to be used and incorporated into new irrigation protocols (Ajeti et al, 2018; Zehnder, 2006). The major concern about NaOCl is its strong cytotoxicity (Lee and Huang, 2019).…”
