The effect of Lantana camara leaf quality on the performance of Falconia intermedia

Abstract: The sap-sucking mirid, Falconia intermedia (Distant) (Hemiptera: Miridae), released as a biological control agent of Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae) in South Africa in 1999, has established at only one site. We investigated the role of induced plant defences as a possible explanation for this lack of establishment. F. intermedia inoculated plants from the five test varieties significantly increased the toughness of their new leaves compared to control plants. Additionally, plants from three L. camara varieties… Show more

“…Although most studies concerning leaf toughness have focused on its effects on leaf-chewing insects (e.g., caterpillars), some studies have addressed its effects on piercing-sucking insects or insects that insert their eggs into host tissues. In another study, leaf toughness and pubescence increased in Lantana camara L. in response to injury by an hemipteran, and led to its failure to establish (Heshula & Hill, 2011). In another study, leaf toughness and pubescence increased in Lantana camara L. in response to injury by an hemipteran, and led to its failure to establish (Heshula & Hill, 2011).…”

“…'Whitney Farm' L. camara plants were previously shown to be susceptible to feeding by F. intermedia and, unlike L. camara from other varieties tested, did not respond to feeding by increasing their physical defences (Heshula & Hill 2011), thus in this case exhibiting a chemical response. Beta-caryophyllene has been reported to play an important role in tri-trophic-induced interactions and is emitted in response to herbivore damage in several plant species, resulting in the attraction of parasitoids and natural enemies of the insect herbivores (Gouinguené et al 2001;Colazza et al 2004).…”

“…However, very few studies have considered these responses in relation to biological control of invasive alien plants. Heshula & Hill (2011) demonstrated the ability by some varieties of Lantana camara L. sensu lato (Verbenaceae) to induce physical responses following feeding by the biological control agent Falconia intermedia (Distant) (Hemiptera: Miridae). Results from this research prompted further questions, including whether some of the L. camara varieties are also able to induce chemical responses to feeding.…”
