The effect of long‐term spatiotemporal variations in urbanization‐induced eutrophication on a benthic ecosystem, Osaka Bay, Japan

Abstract: Detailed spatiotemporal patterns of the influence of urbanization-induced eutrophication on a metazoan benthic community in Osaka Bay were determined using sediment cores and fossil ostracode assemblages from the last 200 yr. Results suggest that total abundance of ostracodes increased in the middle part of the bay as a result of the increase of food supply by eutrophication. Conversely, abundance decreased in the inner bay, likely because of bottom-water hypoxia by eutrophication. The variation in species com… Show more

“…The methodology used for foraminiferal analysis in this study was based on established methods used for similar research (e.g., Karlsen et al 2000;Nordberg et al 2000;Osterman et al 2005;Yasuhara et al 2007). Samples were not dried prior to the wet-sieving process, as the clay pellets would clump together making it very difficult to wash through the sieves.…”

“…Yasuhara & Yamazaki 2005). In the inner part of Osaka Bay, the total abundance of ostracods decreased between 1910 and 1920 (Yasuhara et al 2007). However, eutrophication appears to have accelarated through the 1950s and 1960s and acute hypoxia was reached during the 1970s.…”

“…Reduced ostracod population densities were also observed in Hiroshima Bay, commencing in 1940, caused by the rapid increase in heavy metal concentrations (Cu, Zn, Pb) related to the increased industrialization that began during the Second World War (e.g. Bodergat & Ikeya 1988;Bodergat et al 1997;Yasuhara et al 2003Yasuhara et al , 2007. Ostracodal response to pollutants varied, so some species (e.g.…”
