The effect of mechanical treatment of beech wood surface on quality of surface finish

Abstract: The effect of mechanical treatment of beech wood surface on quality of surface finish. The paper deals with the quality of three surface finishes intended into interior. Three types of coating materials were tested (polyurethane, waterborne, wax). Each type of the surface finish was created on beech wood surface in three various coating thicknesses. The coating thicknesses differed in number of coatings of the coating material. The surface finishes were evaluated according to the impact resistance and the resi… Show more

“…A significant influence of the coating film thickness (resulting from 1, 2, 3 layers of three different clear finishing materials) on the gloss and light induced colour changes of beech light plywood surfaces was reported. Increased light-induced colour changes resulted for thicker polyurethane films, while a slight protective effect was obtained for thicker hard wax films (Slabejová G. and Šmidriaková M. 2022).…”

“…The lower amount of moisture increases the smoothness of the surface, which seems to be important in the case of thin paint coatings. In addition, the use of several layers of the coating increases the surface smoothness, which may translate into increased light reflection and increased gloss value, as demonstrated on beech wood in research conducted by Slabejová et al [73].…”
