The effect of medical and operative birth interventions on child health outcomes in the first 28 days and up to 5 years of age: A linked data population‐based cohort study

Abstract: BackgroundSpontaneous vaginal birth rates are decreasing worldwide, while cesarean delivery, instrumental births, and medical birth interventions are increasing. Emerging evidence suggests that birth interventions may have an effect on children's health. Therefore, the aim of our study was to examine the association between operative and medical birth interventions on the child's health during the first 28 days and up to 5 years of age.MethodsIn New South Wales (Australia), population‐linked data sets were ana… Show more

“…2,30 This issue is not confined to Australia, with a Lancet series recently noting high rates of Caesarean section and Caesarean section overuse as an international concern. 31 Australia's high Caesarean section rates are not only detrimental to both the short-and long-term health outcomes of women and their newborns, [32][33][34] but are also potentially detrimental to health system budgets given their high cost relative to vaginal birth demonstrated in the present study.…”

“…There is a growing recognition that high levels of mortality and morbidity are co‐existing with excessive rates of intervention and failures in the quality of care across the childbearing continuum and into the early weeks of life. This is associated with iatrogenic damage in the short term, and possibly into the longer term and even transgenerational . There is also a global turn toward valuing positive outcomes of maternal and newborn care, and the reduction in negative outcomes …”
