The Effect of Monophasic Pulsed Current with Stretching Exercise on the Heel Pain and Plantar Fascia Thickness in Plantar Fasciitis: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Plantar fasciitis (PF) is one of the most common causes of heel and foot pain. Monophasic pulsed current (MPC) is an electrical stimulation used to accelerate the healing processes. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of MPC and MPC combined with plantar fascia stretching exercises (SE) on heel pain and plantar fascia thickness in treatment of PF and see if there is any relationship between heel pain and plantar fascia thickness after intervention. Forty-four participants diagnosed with PF we… Show more

“…In the research of ultrasonic image denoising, Johannsen et al carry on wavelet transform to the image, denoise the second layer component of the detail through the soft closed value, and then improve the image quality through the anisotropic diffusion model [ 28 ]; Lee et al [ 29 ] use adaptive weighted median filter (AWMF) to denoise the ultrasonic image; Asheghan et al [ 30 ] denoise the image by improving the Savitzky-Golay filter. Abdullah et al [ 31 ] put forward various data processing methods such as unbalanced data preprocessing, sampling method, and unbalanced data cleaning. In a word, the ultrasonic analysis technology under the blessing of AI has played a very obvious role in improving the diagnosis rate.…”

“…This was followed by a plantar fascia specific stretch where subjects crossed the dominant leg over the other in a sitting position and stabilized the heel with their hand. Then, participants performed passive metatarsophalangeal joint dorsiflexion with the other hand for 2x30 seconds with a ten second pause in between (Figure 1) (Alotaibi et al, 2020).…”

“…The ten minute intervention was performed on the dominant leg only and consisted of self-and therapeutic SMM techniques. All techniques were supervised or conducted by a physical therapist following protocols described in prior studies (Ajimsha et al, 2014;Alotaibi et al, 2020;Grieve et al, 2015;Kwangsun et al, 2018;Stecco et al, 2016;Thong-On et al, 2019). The non-dominant leg received no intervention.…”

“…In addition, Gamba et al (2018) observed that the PFT in patients with PF was not associated with its clinical impact, as the PFT was not associated with AOFAS, pain score, or any item of the SF-36. Moreover, although the findings of Alotaibi et al (2020) indicate that PFT significantly decreased after treatment, no significant correlation was observed between PFT and changes in pain after 4 weeks of treatment. Therefore, PFT could be used as a diagnostic predictor, but not as an indicator of treatment response in PF.…”
