The Effect of NaCl on the Conformational Behavior of Acenaphthylene Labeled Poly(N,N‐diethylacrylamide) in Dilute Aqueous Solution

Abstract: Summary: The effect of salts on the conformational behavior of acenaphthylene labeled poly(N,N‐diethylacrylamide) (PDEA/ACE) has been investigated in dilute aqueous solution using UV‐vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. It is demonstrated here that the effectiveness of various salts in changing the lower critical solution temperature (TLCS) of the PDEA/ACE solution followed the Hoffmeister series. The addition of NaCl linearly lowered the TLCS. In dilute aqueous solution, the PDEA/ACE adopted a loose coil confor… Show more

“…Chen [29] and Sibambo [30] reported how the presence of soluble salt (as NaCl) can affect the inter-and intra-molecular hydrogen bonding, polar interactions and hydrophobic interactions between polymer chains within polymer matrices during the hydration. As the polymeric matrix hydrates, the salt ionizes and the solvated ions react with CeO and H-groups forming hydrogen and salt-oxygen bonds between PLGA chains and finally resulting in the cross-linking of lactideeglycolide units in the PLGA molecular structure [31].…”

“…However, when the temperature was higher than 27 • C, the peak currents decreased dramatically. Herein, two typical temperatures, 25 was at the on state because of the relatively large CV peaks; while at 38 • C, the system was at the off state since the CV response became quite small (Fig. 10A).…”

“…According to the above test results, we selected Na 2 SO 4 as the representative salt to discuss the sensitivity of the PDEA films. Na 2 SO 4 caused the phase transition of the PDEA film, which was essentially the same as the temperature-induced phase change [ 37 , 38 ]. When the Na 2 SO 4 concentration was lower than the critical concentration, PDEA exhibited a loose linear structure in which drugs easily diffused, resulting in increased CV response.…”
