The Effect of Nanostructured Chitosan and Chitosan‐thyme Essential Oil Coatings on Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Growth in vitro and on cv Hass Avocado and Fruit Quality

Abstract: In this study, nanostructured edible coatings based on chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) and chitosan‐thyme essential oil nanoparticles (CSTEO‐NPs) were characterized and evaluated on in vitro growth of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and on inoculated avocado fruit cv. Hass, to evaluate their fungicidal activity and the effect on fruit quality. From TEM and particle size distribution characterization, the size of nanoparticles increased after thyme essential oil incorporation. Overall a synergistic effect between… Show more

“…The combination of chitosan and thyme essential oil has also been shown to improve the postharvest quality of avocado when nanostructured edible coatings based on chitosan (1% and 0.05%)-thyme essential oil (1–5%) nanoparticles (CSTEO-NPs) were used against C. gloeosporioides [74].…”

“…Some studies have reported the effect of chitosan-based nanoemulsions incorporated with nutmeg seed essential oils and Zatariamuti flora essential oil in strawberries, with thyme essential oil in avocadoes, and with lemongrass essential oil in grape berries [ 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 ]. In general, the emulsions presented good antimicrobial activity and physicochemical property-preservation such as color, firmness, total soluble solids, and weight in the fruits where they were applied.…”

“…There was a notable reduction in the incidence of C. gloeosporioides on avocado cv. Hass by up to 60% [49]. Also, at the end of the 8-day storage period, the nano-coating had no adverse effects on the quality of avocado; moreover, fruit firmness was better maintained than untreated fruit [51].…”

“…A variety of EOs have presented numerous beneficial properties towards extending the shelf life of avocado fruit postharvest. Thyme EO and its components thymol and carvacrol for example, have all been presented to possess important antifungal activity in their vapour state [49]. For this reason, much research on different ways to apply thyme oil has been published over the last decade [46].…”
