The effect of Probiotic mouthrinse on plaque and gingival inflammation

Abstract: This study evaluated the effect of a Probiotic mouthrinse containing nisin, a bacteriocin extracted from Lactococcus lactis on dental plaque and gingivitis in young adult population.A group of 32 subjects were randomly assigned into two groups of 16 each. The first group started using the control mouthrinse (placebo) for 2 weeks followed by a washout period of 4 weeks. This group then used the test mouthrinse (Probiotic) for a further duration of 2 weeks. The second group followed a similar protocol as the fir… Show more

“…The results were in harmony with a study[18] where a significant decrease in mean GI and PI scores of probiotic rinse compared to placebo rinse at the 14 th -day examination in comparison with the baseline data was observed. Similar significant reductions were observed in gingival scores during the 2-week period.…”

“…Noordin and Kamin[ 5 ] conducted a trial among 90 school children and assigned them into placebo, chlorhexidine, and probiotic groups; and plaque scores were recorded at baseline (0 day), on 15 th day (after 14 days of intervention), and 3 weeks (after discontinuation of intervention). Probiotic mouthrinse was more effective for inhibition of dental plaque accumulation after 14 days of intervention and also after 3 weeks of discontinuation of intervention.…”

“…Moreover, research groups such as Noordin and Kamin [25] were successful in demonstrating that probiotics reduced the accumulation of dental plaque/oral biofilm. However, modulation of composition of the oral biofilm with an increased amount of non-cariogenic organisms and a decrease of pathogenic organisms could prove beneficial.…”
