The Effect of Short-Term Wingate-Based High Intensity Interval Training on Anaerobic Power and Isokinetic Muscle Function in Adolescent Badminton Players

Abstract: Badminton requires both aerobic fitness and anaerobic ability for high performance. High intensity interval training (HIIT) is a traditional training method for improving fitness. In this study, we investigated whether short-term Wingate-based HIIT is effective for improving anaerobic activity in youth badminton players. Participants included 32 total badminton players in middle school and high school. They were divided into two groups (HIIT and moderate continuous training (MCT)). Training occurred for 4 week… Show more

“…Similar results have been reported in previous studies. In the HIIT study conducted on badminton players, HIIT training three sessions per week for four weeks, totaling 12 sessions, improved peak power from one to four sets, but did not change in the 5th set [ 37 ]. This also means that HFG has a slightly better anaerobic power improvement effect than LFG.…”

“…The MICT program was conducted 3 times a week for 4 weeks in the same way as the HIIT group using the training program described in Ko et al [ 18 ]. The MICT group performed continuous cycling for 60 min at moderate intensity, eliciting 55–75% of the VO 2 peak using an electromagnetically braked cycle ergometer.…”

“…However, HIIT performed on a stationary bicycle showed a significantly lower dropout rate than a form of training such as running [ 17 ]. Compared to plyometric or sprint training, HIIT using a stationary bicycle has the advantage of being able to monitor the heart rate response in real time and it is easy to observe the training effect according to the absolute training intensity [ 18 ]. Moreover, training using a stationary bicycle can be useful for soccer players even to prevent occupational overuse syndrome [ 19 ].…”
