The Effect of Silica-Filler on Polyurethane Adhesives Based on Renewable Resource for Wood Bonding

Abstract: The aim of the study was to evaluate the applicability and performance of polyglycerol- and sucrose-based polyols as components of a simplified formulation of polyurethane adhesives. Colloidal silica was used as a viscosity control and reinforcing agent. The adhesives were examined in terms of reactivity, thermal stability, viscosity, work of adhesion, wetting, surface energy, and bonding strength on wooden substrates. Silica was found to increase gelling time, but markedly improved bonding strength and adhesi… Show more

“…[1][2][3][4] Given their very good ultraviolet resistance and good adhesion to various substrates, use of PU coatings in various industrial applications including the marine, automotive, and aeronautical sectors, as architectural coatings, and wind turbines. 2,[5][6][7][8][9] PU coatings are applied on surfaces exposed to harsh weather conditions, such as high humidity conditions, freezing rain and snow, and subfreezing temperatures.…”

“…Their importance grows each year; thus, unsurprisingly, the number of PUR-manufactured products steadily increases. PUR-based materials find many applications in critical industry sectors such as furniture, , automotive, , electronics, , construction, footwear, coatings, varnishes, packages, adhesives, and others. , …”

“…Glycerol is a low-cost and non-toxic chemical that can function as a plasticizer, providing an alternative for the generation of bio-based adhesives (Milotoskyi et al 2019;Azerêdo et al 2022). Unfortunately, pure glycerol gives a low shear strength bonding of wood (Mamiński et al 2011). It must be combined with other chemicals, such as citric acid mentioned above.…”

“…Tannins bond with the glycerol structure to form ether linkages (Segovia et al 2020;Oktay et al 2021). Similar to glycerol, other polyhydric alcohol-based liquefaction products need to be combined, for good performance, with isocyanate-based chemicals such as hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) or polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI), for the effective production of wood adhesives (Mamiński et al 2011;Jiang et al 2021). The composition of liquefied biomass products depends on the chemical composition of the biomass itself and the specific type of liquefying reagent used (Jiang et al 2022), and the liquefaction process is a great way to introduce natural phenolic compounds into glycerol.…”
