The Effect of Silica (SiO2) to the Severity of Yellow Leaf Curl Disease on Chili Pepper

Abstract: Yellow leaf curl disease of chili pepper caused by Pepper yellow leaf curl virus (PYLCV) has been reported as an important disease in Java and Bali. Disease severity reached 80−100% and it may cause significant yield losses. In order to reduce the negative impact of synthetic insecticides, silica application was evaluated for its potency to suppress the disease. A greenhouse experiment was conducted using randomly block design with 2 factors: PYLCV isolate (Java and Bali) and silica (SiO2) treatment (with and … Show more

“…The DNA fragments in the two islands are similar to the Begomovirus DNA in chili plants in Yogyakarta and Central Java (580 bp) (Kandito et al 2019). The size of DNA fragments from chili Begomovirus PCR results in several areas in Indonesia has been previously reported, such as in Java and Sumatra, at 400 bp and in Bali at 912 bp (Fadhila et al 2022;Selangga et al 2019). Several countries have also previously reported the size of DNA fragments due to molecular identification of Begomovirus in chili plants by PCR.…”

“…Begomovirus has been reported in Indonesia in tomato, eggplant, cucumber, pumpkin and sweet potato . In Indonesia, Begomovirus infection in chili pepper was first reported in Java and several years later Selangga et al (2019), Selangga and Listihani (2021), reported that chili pepper crops in several regions in (Bali Province) had been infected by Begomovirus. The main type of Begomovirus in chili pepper is Pepper yellow leaf curl virus (PYLCV).…”

“…Natural transmission of Begomovirus occurs through insect vector B. tabaci in persistent circulative nature (Czosnek et al 2017). The study of Begomovirus transmission showed that the most efficient transmission occurs with acquisition feeding period for 24 hours and inoculation feeding period of 24 hours (Pan et al 2018;Selangga et al 2019). According to Shalev et al (2016) one adult B. tabaci vector after sucking inoculum source for 24 hours and going through inoculation period for 48 hours, can transmit the disease with an incidence rate of 30-50%.…”

“…Green mosaic on the top of leaf was the early symptom chili pepper infecting viruses, followed by cupping upward or cupping downward and yellowing, plants will become dwarfs when infected with the virus as the seeds form. These types of symptoms had also been reported as typical of yellow leaf curl disease of chili pepper in Bali Island, Indonesia (Selangga et al, 2019). The type of symptoms associated with the disease in Bali Island is same as those from West Sumatra and Java, which yellowing, mosaic, curling, cupping and stunting were commonly found in West Sumatera (Trisno et al, 2009) and bright yellow colouring was observed in Java (Sulandari, 2004).…”
