The effect of sulfite and chronic restraint stress on brain lipid peroxidation and anti-oxidant enzyme activities

Abstract: Sulfites are used as anti-microbial and anti-oxidant agents in a variety of drugs, and function as a preservative in many food preparations. In addition to these effects, sulfites oxidize to sulfite radicals initiating lipid peroxidation. The objective of our study was to investigate the effect of restraint stress and sulfite on brain lipid peroxidation and anti-oxidant enzyme activities. Forty male Wistar rats, aged three months, were randomized to one of the following groups: control, restraint stress, sulfi… Show more

“…Here, no differences between the groups were found on TBARS determination. These results agree with some reports from the literature [31,35], although several studies have shown increased TBARS in brain structures of chronically stressed animals [21,36,37]. These differences may be related to the use of different models of chronic stress (different stressors and different periods of exposure to stress).…”

“…Furthermore, both our assays for intra-oocyte ROS and glutathione and CCC supplementation to IVM medium demonstrated that restraint stress increased oxidative stress in oocytes. It has been reported that stresses including restraint stress cause the disruption of homeostasis and an imbalanced antioxidant status in blood and several organs (Sahin et al 2004, Derin et al 2006, Sahin & Gü mü şlü 2007. However, stress-induced oxidative stress has not been observed in ovaries, although our previous study has indicated that restraint stress causes oxidative stress in oocytes (Zhou et al 2012).…”

“…In somatic cells, physical and psychological stressors cause oxidative stress by upsetting the balance between prooxidant and antioxidant status (Ejchel-Cohen et al 2006, Zafir & Banu 2009). Furthermore, studies using rat models have demonstrated that restraint stress induces oxidative stress in different organs (Zaidi et al 2003, Derin et al 2006, Sahin et al 2006, Akpinar et al 2008. However, although our recent study has provided preliminary evidence that maternal restraint stress increases oxidative stress in the oocyte (Zhou et al 2012), reports on whether restraint stress causes oxidative stress in the ovary are limited.…”

“…Five sulfite salts including sodium metabisulfite (Na 2 S 2 O 5 ), potassium metabisulfite (K 2 S 2 O 5 ), sodium sulfite (Na 2 SO 3 ), sodium bisulfite (NaHSO 3 ), potassium sulfite (K 2 SO 3 ) are commonly used as antioxidants in food preparations (Elmas et al, 2005). In addition to this, studies have postulated that under certain conditions, sodium metabisulfite may act through cell disruption and compromise membrane permeability and lipid peroxidation (Derin et al, 2006).…”
