The effectiveness of psychodramatic techniques: A meta-analysis.

Abstract: Questions concerning the scientific basis of the clinical application of psychodramatic techniques have been raised primarily because of the infrequency of research publications that validate the clinical observations. A meta-analysis conducted on the basis of 25 experimentally designed studies showed an overall effect size that points to a large size improvement effect similar to or better than that commonly reported for group psychotherapy in general. The techniques of role reversal and doubling emerged as t… Show more

“…3 In fact, spontaneity is a psychological construct not easily definable, which assumes an important role in the foundation of psychodrama. 4 It was elaborated by Jacob Moreno, who defined it as "a response of an individual to a new situation and the new response to an old situation" 5(p.50) and tried to operationalize such an idea in some early works. “…While at first it was applied in psychopedagogic centers for the rehabilitation of children and adolescents with a variety of problems (Anzieu, 1979), later it was proved to be successful for several psychopathological symptoms among children, adolescents and adults (Lemoine & Lemoine, 1973) and its practice has spread also in Italy (e.g., Croce, 2001;Miglietta, 1998). Indeed, analytical psychodrama is a suitable psychotherapy technique for the treatment of anxiety-depressive disorders, borderline and pre-psychotic conditions (Kipper & Ritchie, 2003). Psychodrama simultaneously works to both raise awareness of suffering mental content and to create more functional models of behavior and communication through the help of the group.…”

“…Many articles and research projects have focused on the use of psychodrama in various settings and the use of various techniques in such settings, (Kipper and Ritchie 2003;Van der May and Peake 1980;Lippitt 1958;McVie et al 2011;Daniels 2008;Gimenez Hinkle 2008;Moreno 1959/1975). As far as I can ascertain, there are no published replications of research into any one specific technique or replications of research into the application of psychodrama in a particular field with a particular group.…”
