Summary Betel nut wastes are firstly modified with nitric acid/thiourea to fabricate hetero‐element doping carbon (C‐H‐T) for energy storage. C‐H‐T exhibits improved content of O (12.27%), N (2.52%), and S (2.88%) compared with that of purely carbonized carbon with O (9.2%) and N (1.76%). Without nitric acid heat treatment, the carbon materials prepared by hydrothermal treatment with thiourea only get increasing hetero‐elements content of O (10.46%), N (2.9%), and S (0.53%). The similar results have been obtained using urea and melamine as dopants. Due to the synergistic effects of the hetero‐elements containing functional groups, C‐H‐T get a significant enhancement in its electrochemical properties with a high capacitance (423 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1) in KOH electrolyte. C‐H‐T based coin‐type symmetric supercapacitors display maximum energy density of 61.7 Wh kg−1 and considerate cycling ability with 94% capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles. The fabricated two‐step method can inspire the increase of hetero‐elements content in carbon materials to develop its application in energy storage.

A qualitative study of gutka and paan masala use among Bhutanese and Burmese migrants in Georgia

The city of Clarkston (Georgia) is home to many refugees and immigrants, including Bhutanese and Burmese populations. Use of gutka and paan masala is common in these populations. While gutka and paan masala contain toxic ingredients including carcinogens, little research has examined general use, perceptions of risk, cultural norms, and access to these products among Bhutanese and Burmese populations in the southern U.S. This study uses focus groups and key informant interviews to develop an understanding of gutka and paan masala use among Bhutanese and Burmese refugee populations residing in Clarkston, focusing in particular on knowledge and perceptions of harm, patterns of and reasons for use, access to gutka and paan masala, and resources for cessation and prevention of gutka and paan masala use. We conducted 21 focus groups with Bhutanese and Burmese youths and adults and 11 key informant interviews. We analyzed data using MAXQDA and a grounded theory approach. Emerging themes included mixed understandings of ingredients and harms associated with gutka and paan masala use. The continued use of paan masala was perceived to be due to cultural traditions. Youths, particularly Bhutanese, were perceived as a rising group of users of gutka and paan masala. Widespread availability and accessibility in Clarkston made it easy for both adults and youths to acquire and use gutka and paan masala. Few participants knew about prevention efforts or resources in their communities. In conclusion, culturally-relevant awareness and education programs as well as health promotion materials regarding gutka and paan masala are much needed in Bhutanese and Burmese communities. More regulatory actions are needed, such as better warning signs in businesses to inform customers of ingredients in these products and their health risks, age restrictions on gutka and paan masala purchase, and compliance checks.

Background: As a psychoactive substance that spans borders and cultures, researchers estimate that 600 million people use the areca nut. Despite its historical and geographical significance, betel nut use has received far less research attention than other stimulants such as tobacco, coffee or tea. Scholars have observed that social media platforms have significant effects on the promotion and use of addictive substances.Objectives: Our study investigates user practices and activities on a sample of Instagram posts tagged #betelnut dating back to 2011.Methods: Using social media analytics and hashtag network analysis, we examined user practices and activities on a sample of over 7800 Instagram posts tagged #betelnut dated between July 2011 to February 2019 that were collected in early 2019.Results: Findings determined that #betelnut is a growing topical hashtag on Instagram with content that drives social engagement.Importance: Co-occurring hashtags with #betelnut reflect regional language and cultural naming conventions that center around the Indian subcontinent and Melanesia. The importance of future work in this area is highlighted.
