“…15 No other protocol tried previously had a more meaningful improvement than single AGL use in this pregnancy period of dogs. 10,11,20 In the present study, no significant difference was found in the T-SA and the T-EA between groups. These parameters were in parallel with previous studies that reported vaginal discharge starting in 4-7 days, 13 and fetal expulsion occurring in 5-9 days, 13 in 8 days 12 and in an average of 4.4 days after the first AGL injection.…”

“…7 Aglepristone has been reported to be safe and effective in inducing abortions, in preventing pregnancy and in inducing labour in bitches and cats. 5,[8][9][10][11][12][13][14] However, the success rate of AGL decreases as the gestation period progresses. 15 The cost, lack of licensing and limited availability are the main disadvantages of AGL.…”

“…The prolonged inhibitory effect on progesterone receptors [14] is exerted not only at uterine level, where it lowers the relapse rate, but also at the central level [31], where it shortens the inter-estrus period [7]; moreover, aglepristone binds with hypothalamic receptors for progesterone, probably counteracting the negative feedback exerted by gonadotropin-releasing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone on progesterone release and allowing an earlier follicular maturation [14]. While aglepristone competitively act on progesterone receptors, prostaglandins have a luteolytic effect [12], directly decreasing the blood progesterone concentration [32]. The synergistic actions of these 2 molecules contributed to the high success rate achieved.…”

“…While AGL has genotoxic and cytotoxic effects on bone marrow when used to terminate mid-term pregnancies in rabbits [30] , there is no evidence of such side effects in cats or dogs; both AGL and CBG have been reported to be safe in dogs and cats aside from some mild side effects (diarrhea, anorexia/depression, inflammation at injection site, lethargy for AGL) [13,14,20] and (vomiting for CBG) [1] . The side effects from combined use were related to PGF 2 α [11] .…”

“…Combined hormone treatments for termination of pregnancy such as AGL+PGE1 [19] , AGL+PGF 2 α [20] , or CBG+PGF 2 α [8] have been used with satisfying results in dogs. Although reports of combined hormone treatments in cats are not as prevalent as in dogs, a few studies use combined treatments to terminate the pregnancy in cats.…”
