The Effects of an Arabinogalactan-Protein from the White-Skinned Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) on Blood Glucose in Spontaneous Diabetic Mice

Abstract: We examined the effects of an arabinogalactanprotein (WSSP-AGP) from Ipomoea batatas L. on hyperglycemia in db/db mice. An oral glucose tolerance test indicated significantly decreased plasma glucose levels by WSSP-AGP. Additionally, an insulin tolerance test found improvement in insulin sensitivity due to treatment with WSSP-AGP. This suggests that amelioration of insulin resistance by WSSP-AGP causes to lead its hypoglycemic effects.

“…According to Oki et al (24), arabinogalactan isolated from the tuberous cortex of WSSP is an antidiabetic compound that can decrease the elevation in plasma glucose levels by reducing insulin resistance. The active component isolated from WSSP has a high molecular weight (24). In addition, resistant starch may be a promising dietary fiber for the preventing or managing diabetes and the related diseases.…”

“…White sweet potato (WSP; Ipomoea batatas L.) belongs to the Convolvulaceae family. WSP extracts have antidiabetic activity in both insulin-deficient and -resistant diabetic models (21)(22)(23)(24)(25). In patients with T2DM, WSP tuber extract effectively reduced insulin resistance as well as fibrinogen, fasting plasma glucose, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels (26)(27)(28).…”

“…Available epidemiological evidence showed that the negative association between the Hedonic pattern and insulin resistance could be attributable to the pattern's healthy components, which may include alcohol in a moderate amount ( 31 , 32 ) , fresh vegetables ( 2 ) , tubers ( 33 ) and some micronutrients such as vitamin C ( 34 ) , Mg ( 35 , 36 ) , Zn ( 37 ) and Se ( 38 ) . Contribution of these components was supported by the present results.…”

“…The average molecular weight of SPG-1 was 508.3 kD. 9 This difference may be attributed to the fact that both lectin and arabinogalactan protein are only portions of glycoprotein. Nevertheless, the fact that potato lectin is only a portion of glycoproteins and the yield from this study was based on a dry basis should be noted.…”

“…Ozaki et al 8 and Oki et al 9 found that an arabinogalactan protein (WSSP-AGP) from the white-skinned sweet potato has hypoglycemic effects. In our previous study, 2 we found that SPG exhibits a dose-dependent hypolipidemic effect.…”
