The Effects of an Empowerment Education Program for Kidney Transplantation Patients

Abstract: Kidney transplant patients who underwent an EEP showed a decrease in uncertainty and an improvement in self-care ability and compliance. Thus, our findings confirmed that an EEP can be an independent intervention method for improving and maintaining the health of kidney transplant patients.

“…Empowerment education is a new educational model with empowerment and self-management as the core and educational process as the center. Advocate patients by stimulating self-management motivation, actively pay attention to their own health, clarify self-management responsibilities, promote behavioral changes, and actively implement self-behavioral care ( Kim and You, 2017 ). At present, this model is widely used in chronic disease health education and has achieved remarkable results ( Guo et al, 2020 ).…”

“…In Korea, due to the lack of a disease-specific empowerment instrument, researchers used modified and supplemented instruments to suit the subject (Son & Kim, 2017), or expanded them to include all health conditions, rather than specific diseases (Ko & Kang, 2018). Recently, an empowerment enhancement intervention study was attempted in patients with chronic diseases in Korea, but the effect of empowerment enhancement was indirectly verified by measuring uncertainty, self-care agency, self-efficacy, and participation (Kim & You, 2017;Oh & Kim, 2016). This is due to the absence of an empowerment measurement that reflects patients' characteristics; thus, research on measuring and evaluating empowerment should precede research on intervention and effectiveness, to accurately measure the change of empowerment before and after an intervention.…”

“…It is essential to know the types and methods of immunosuppressant administration, graft monitoring, lifestyle changes, infection prevention and management, and monitoring of any signs and symptoms of rejection [ 6 , 23 ]. To achieve this, knowledge must be acquired through prior education [ 23 , 24 ]. Rosaasen and Mainra [ 7 ] reported that medication, KT processes, lifestyle changes post-transplantation, and infection control methods should be known before KT as these can reduce morbidity, mortality, and the cost of health and disease management [ 25 ].…”
