“…Previous studies have not examined child gender differences in a parent's use of screen time as a functional tool for controlling active behaviors (Barroso et al, 2020;Thompson et al, 2018), but our results suggest that promotion of screen time may serve different functions or have a different strength of associations for boys and girls. A second potential explanation for our finding is that PA videos have been shown to improve preschool-aged children's locomotor development (Bulca et al, 2020), it is possible that children exposed to more screen time may have had greater exposure to characters who model PA, leading those children toward better locomotor skill development.
