The effects of Fusilade (Fluazifop-p-butyl) on germination, mitotic frequency and α-amylase activity of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) seeds

Abstract: In this study, seed germination percentages, effects on phases of mitosis and a-amylase enzyme activity of lentil seeds treated with four different concentrations (0.25, 0.5, 1 and 1.5%) of Fusilade (Fluazifop-p-butyl) were determined. Median EC (effective concentration) values were calculated according to seed germination percentages after treatment for 72 h. Germination percentages of primary lentil roots decreased with increasing Fusilade concentrations. Cytological observations showed that the mitotic freq… Show more

“…This was clearly demonstrated for the roots of Lens culinaris and Zea mays with different concentrations of the herbicides fusillade and metsulfuron methyl which caused decrease in the seed germination (Fayez et al 1994;Aksoy et al 2007). Sasaki et al (1968) reported that the use of herbicide 2, 4-dicloro-phenoxy acetic acid (2, 4-D) in Pinus, decreased the seed germination percentage and similar results were found by Chopra and Singh (1978) in Guizotia which was treated with the herbicide.…”

“…Germination was scored on the fifth day (Aksoy et al 2007) since the maximum number of seeds had germinated by this time. Seedling height was measured randomly from each petri plates per treatment on the seventh day (Singh et al 1979).…”

“…Since their introduction in the 1970s, glyphosate (active ingredient in the nonselective herbicide Roundup) and Fluazifop‐p‐butyl (active ingredient in the grass selective herbicide Fusilade) have been two of the most commonly used postemergent herbicides (Baylis 2000). Although postemergent herbicides have no intended impacts on seed germination and seedling emergence, there is increasing evidence to the contrary (Aksoy et al 2007; Aksoy & Dane 2007; Gomes et al 2017). The grass‐specific herbicide Fluazifop‐p‐butyl has had negative effects on seed germination, seedling emergence, and health for a range of species including dicots (Rokich et al 2009; Bundock 2014).…”
