The Effects of Hydrophilic Polyethylene Glycol-Based Adhesion Barrier Use to Prevent Intra-abdominal Adhesions in Intra-abdominal Sepsis Model

Abstract: Postoperative adhesion formation is still an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Hydrophilic polyethylene glycol-based adhesion barrier (SprayGel™, Confluent Surgical, Inc., Waltham, MA) is reported to prevent adhesion formation after gynecologic surgery. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of SprayGel™ on adhesion formation after laparotomy in an experimental septic peritonitis model. Wistar albino male rats with weights of 250-350 g were used in this study. Forty rats were grouped into fou… Show more

“…Barrier attachment to oozing surfaces is an important factor to ensure the anti-adhesion effect is maintained, particularly during surgeries that include a high risk of bleeding 148 . Overall, natural barriers seem to maintain more effective anti-adhesion effects on oozing surfaces.…”

“…In light of the above, it would be preferable to use monofilament sutures of a smaller calibre. The titanium coated clips used in laparoscopy are biologically inert and therefore reduce the inflammatory insult compared to sutures [ 34 ], hence, resulting in a lower risk of adhesions. It is essential that the intraperitoneal tissues and viscera are treated with extreme care to avoid vascular damage [ 35 ], maintain meticulous debridement and peritoneal detachment and avoid unnecessary viscerolysis.…”

“…Complications generated by PAA can result in numerous problems, such as chronic abdominal pain, small bowel obstruction, infertility in women, and even the secondary surgery [3,4]. Furthermore, 40% of intestinal obstruction is caused by PAA [5].…”
