The effects of seed inoculation with Rhizobium and inorganic nitrogen fertilization on some physiological and agronomical traits of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) cv. ILC 482, were investigated at the Experimental Farm of the Agriculture Faculty, University of Mohaghegh Ardabili. The trial was laid out in split plot design based on randomized complete block with four replications. Experimental factors were mineral nitrogen fertilizer at four levels (0, 50, 75 and 100 kg urea ha -1 ) in the main plots, and two levels of inoculation with Rhizobium bacteria (with and without inoculation) as sub plots. N application and Rh. inoculation showed positive effects on physiological and agronomical traits of chickpea. The highest value of leaf RWC was recorded at 50 kg urea ha -1 what was statistically in par with 75 kg urea ha -1 application, while the usage of 75 kg urea ha -1 showed the maximum stem RWC. The maximum CMS was obtained from application of 75 kg urea ha ) and Rh. inoculation. Application of 75 kg urea ha -1 was statistically in par with 100 kg urea ha -1 in all of these traits. The results pointed out that some N fertilization (i.e. between 50 and 75 kg urea ha -1 ) as starter can be beneficial to improve growth, development, physiological traits and total yield of inoculated chickpea.

Purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) poses a significant challenge to Florida tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) producers due to its ability to puncture plastic mulch, resilient tubers, and rapid rhizome proliferation. Preemergence herbicides effectively suppress purple nutsedge in tomatoes under plastic mulch. Although the impact of co‐application of herbicides with fertilizers has been studied in row crops, its potential in vegetable plasticulture systems remains unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and crop safety of the preemergence herbicide S‐metolachlor, both as a standalone treatment and in combination with a fertilizer enhancer or chelated iron in tomato plasticulture. Field trials at the University of Florida's Southwest Florida Research and Education Center, Immokalee, FL, involved applying S‐metolachlor at the recommended rate of 1 kg a.i. ha−1 on raised beds before installing plastic mulch. The herbicide was applied as a blanket spray alone, mixed with fertilizer enhancer, and coated on chelated iron fertilizer. Results indicate that using S‐metolachlor alone effectively reduced purple nutsedge density compared to the nontreated control in both trials I and II. Combining S‐metolachlor with fertilizer enhancer or chelated iron resulted in a >30% and 57% reduction in purple nutsedge density, respectively, compared to the nontreated control in trial II. These treatments did not adversely impact chlorophyll content or crop yield (p > 0.05) compared to the nontreated control. Notably, tomato yield significantly (p < 0.05) decreased with increased purple nutsedge density at 4, 8, and 12 weeks after transplanting. Overall, the results from both trials suggest that using S‐metolachlor is an effective approach to reduce purple nutsedge infestation in plastic‐mulched raised beds without negatively impacting tomato health and productivity.

A challenging aspect with the use of protein hydrolysates in commercial manufacturing processes of recombinant therapeutic proteins is their impacts on the protein production due to a lack of understanding of batch-to-batch variability. Soy hydrolysates variability and its impact on fed-batch production of a recombinant monoclonal antibody (mAb) expressed in Sp2/0 cells were studied using 37 batches from the same vendor. The batch-to-batch variability of soy hydrolysates impacted cell growth, titer and product quality. Physicochemical characterization of batches confirmed that soy hydrolysates are mainly a source of amino acids and peptides containing lower amounts of other components such as carbohydrates and chemical elements in cell culture media. Soy hydrolysates composition of different batches was consistent except for trace elements. Statistical analyses identified iron as a potential marker of a poor process performance. To verify this correlation, two forms of iron, ferric ammonium citrate and ferrous sulfate, were added to a batch of soy hydrolysates associated to a low level of iron during cell culture. Both forms of iron reduced significantly cell growth, mAb titer and increased level of the acidic charge variants of the mAb. Consequently, trace element composition of soy hydrolysates or of all incoming raw materials might lead to significant impacts on process performance and product quality and therefore need to be tightly controlled.
