The Effects of Shift Work on Cardio-Metabolic Diseases and Eating Patterns

Abstract: Energy metabolism is tightly linked with circadian rhythms, exposure to ambient light, sleep/wake, fasting/eating, and rest/activity cycles. External factors, such as shift work, lead to a disruption of these rhythms, often called circadian misalignment. Circadian misalignment has an impact on some physiological markers. However, these proxy measurements do not immediately translate into major clinical health outcomes, as shown by later detrimental health effects of shift work and cardio-metabolic disorders. T… Show more

“…A prevalent, and extreme cause of circadian misalignment is shiftwork. Interestingly, such individuals have independently increased risk of immune disorders such as asthma (65), cardiovascular disease (66,67), type-2 diabetes (67), breast cancer (68), Covid-19 infection (69), hospitalisation and reduced vaccination efficacy (69,70), indicating the potentially serious effects of circadian disruption.…”

“…Circadian rhythms are recognized as not simply a novel occurrence within the human body but, more significantly, a key cycle that: (1) spans the operation of systems biology units [116,117], (2) connects the microbiome with those units [118], and (3) ultimately can result in healthy metabolism and physiology [119] or disease [120][121][122].…”

“…Shift work has been associated with a disruption of circadian rhythm and normal sleep patterns, a condition commonly referred to as shift work disorder (18). In line with evidence showing a link between sleep and cardiometabolic health, a recent review has suggested that shift work poses a risk factor for cardiovascular risk, obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome, and can lead to changes in eating behaviors (irregular meal patterns and timing) and higher propensity for unhealthy food choices (19).…”
