The effects of silver dressings on chronic and burns wound healing

Abstract: Silver (Ag) has been thought to improve wound healing and reduce instances of associated infections for many years. There are centuries-old records of silver being used in wound treatment, but the past two decades in particular have seen an increasing clinical application of silver-impregnated wound dressings and as such, have seen the number of research articles similarly increase. The majority of these articles focus on the positives and potential negatives (e.g. the toxicity of silver as a heavy metal) of u… Show more

“…The extensive knowledge of respondents is also demonstrated in their awareness of early signs and symptoms of the disease, which was reported as either a painless itch or boils or rashes. These are consistent with biomedical knowledge Elliott, 2010;Nienhuis et al, 2010). These findings could serve as entry points for educational messages targeting early reporting to the health facility for diagnosis and treatment.…”

“…For example, AgNPs could be used as substrates for Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) to probe single molecules [6], and also useful catalysts for the oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde [7]. AgNPs has been known as excellent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agents, and thus were used to improve wound healing [8]. To date, a number of physical and chemical strategies were employed for the synthesis of AgNPs [9,10].…”

“…Due to their antibacterial activity, silver-nanoparticles (NPs) are used commonly in medical products and devices, food storage materials, cosmetics, various health care products, and industrial products. In medical applications, silver-NPs have been used for silver-based dressings [1,2], silver-coated catheters [3,4], silver-based hydrogel [5-7]. Silver-NP-hydrogel composites are composed of silver-NP and hydrogel which are used as carrier for silver particles.…”
