The effects of soman in vitro on catechol‐o‐methyltransferase and monoamine oxidase activities in rabbit tissues

Abstract: Soman (pinacolyl methylphosphonofluoridate) not only increases acetylcholine levels by inhibiting cholinesterases, it also alters the levels of some other neurotransmitters including norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin. Soman also causes an alteration in the activities of the enzymes metabolizing norepinephrine when it is administered to animals. Because these alterations may result from indirect effects on the enzymes, the effects of in vitro application of soman on catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) and… Show more

“…During gut irritation, serotonergic signaling that terminate 5-HT3 action is diminished in the mucosa and lead to abdominal toxicity (Mach, 2004). Exposure to CWNA alters the concentration of neurotransmitters (Robinson and Hambrecht, 1988;Fosbraey et al, 1990;Hsu et al, 1990). An increase in the level of 5-HT was reported following CWNA intoxication, which can dysregulate the bidirectional communication between the gut with its ENS and the brain (Prioux-Guyonneau et al, 1982).…”
