The effects of strength training and raloxifene on bone health in aging ovariectomized rats

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of strength training (ST) and raloxifene (Ral), alone or in combination, on the prevention of bone loss in an aging estrogen-deficient rat model. Aging Wistar female rats were ovariectomized at 14months and allocated to four groups: (1) non-trained and treated with vehicle, NT-Veh; (2) strength training and treated with vehicle, ST-Veh; (3) non-trained and treated with raloxifene, NT-Ral; and (4) strength training and treated with raloxifene, ST-Ral. ST was … Show more

“…An analysis of two histological sections from each animal was performed at ×400 magnification. The immunolabeling pattern was evaluated using scores, adapted from the criteria established by Stringhetta‐Garcia et al, (). For BMP 2/4, OCN, and VEGF, SCORE 0 means total absence of immunolabeling; SCORE 1 means low labeling, considering that approximately 1/3 of the cells were immunoreactive and that there was a light labeling in the extracellular matrix; SCORE 2 means moderate labeling, considering that approximately 1/2 of the cells were immunoreactive and that there was a moderate labeling in the extracellular matrix; SCORE 3 means high labeling, considering that approximately 2/3 of the cells were immunoreactive and that there was a strong labeling in the extracellular matrix.…”

“…The animals were familiarized with a climbing ladder (1.1 × 0.18 m, 2-cm grid, 80°incline-Engineered by Department of maintenance -São Paulo State University (UNESP), School of Dentistry, Araçatuba, SP, Brazill) for 3 days, based on previous studies [23,26]. The adaptation period was composed by 3 sessions, in non-consecutive days, without load.…”
