The Effects of Vitamin C on the Multiple Pathophysiological Stages of COVID-19

Abstract: Currently available anti-viral drugs may be useful in reducing the viral load but are not providing the necessary physiological effects to reduce the SARS-CoV-2 complications efficiently. Treatments that provide better clinical outcomes are urgently needed. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid, AA) is an essential nutrient with many biological roles that have been proven to play an important part in immune function; it serves as an antioxidant, an anti-viral, and exerts anti-thrombotic effects among many other physiologic… Show more

“…At pharmacological doses, vitamin C is beneficial to patients affected by CARDS and other respiratory illnesses. Moreover, high-dose intravenous vitamin C (HDIVC) may be advantageous in patients with diverse viral diseases [ 81 ]. The antiviral activity of vitamin C is due to the support of lymphocyte activity, enhancement of interferon-α production, and modulation of cytokines, which lowers inflammation, improving endothelial dysfunction and restoring mitochondrial function.…”

“…The intravenous usage of antioxidants in severe cases of infection is due to their ability to inhibit cytokine storms [ 177 ]. VC has been proven in animal and tissue models to modulate the immunological system by enhancing interferon production, suppressing oxidative stress and thrombosis, inhibiting cytokine storms, and lessening alveolar damage, and it has many other effects on the human body [ 178 ]. It is also known to enhance the maturation and proliferation of lymphocytes.…”

“…Vitamin C boost up immune system functions such as lymphocyte proliferation, antimicrobial activity, anti-natural killer cell activity [28]. SARS-CoV-2 impacts on the levels of vitamin C due to stress in Covid-19 patients, as a result vitamin C is mandatory for SARS-CoV-2 infected patients [29].…”
