The efficacy of dexamethasone injection on postoperative pain in lower third molar surgery

Abstract: BackgroundSurgery on the lower impacted third molar usually involves trauma in the highly vascularized loose connective tissue area, leading to inflammatory sequelae including postoperative pain, swelling, and general oral dysfunction during the immediate post-operative phase. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of preoperative injection of a single dose of 8 mg dexamethasone for postoperative pain control in lower third molar surgery.MethodsA controlled, randomized, split-mouth, prospective stud… Show more

“…A previously published study used a 3-4 week interval between the first and second surgeries for patients with bilateral lower third molar surgery [ 3 4 12 ]. Therefore, we chose a 3-week interval between the surgeries in this study so that postoperative sequelae of the local anesthetic injection, such as pain and numbness, were reduced.…”

“…On the other hand, the effect of post-surgical dexamethasone sodium phosphate injection in a clinical study conducted by Mung Latt et al in 2016 on patients with bilateral dental wisdom teeth extracted showed that the use of dexamethasone after mandibular wisdom teeth surgery significantly reduces pain, trismus, swelling and consuming extra analgesics after surgery in patients, compared with placebo. Pain, especially one day after surgery, showed a significant decrease, and the use of excessive analgesics was lower (27).…”
