The Efficacy of HIV/STI Behavioral Interventions for African American Females in the United States: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Behavioral interventions are efficacious at preventing HIV and STIs among African American females. More research is needed to examine the potential contribution of prevention strategies that attend to community-level and structural-level factors affecting HIV infection and transmission in this population.

“…However, young people who were involved in seropositive participant and attitudinal discussion 19 interventions have revealed more important behavioral changes than role play group. In this sense, our findings have not confirmed the relevant effectiveness of role play in past studies 28 . Therefore, according to IMB model, our results would support the relevance of motivational determinants to achieve and maintain preventive behavior 22 .…”

“…According to our modified DB scoring system, the quality of the 76 intervention studies ranged from 15 to 29 with a mean of 22.44. Following a previously published DB rating system, 19 sixty-three (83 %) of the studies were rated as very good (>20), 12 (16 %) as good (16)(17)(18)(19), and only 1 (1 %) as fair (11)(12)(13)(14)(15); no study was rated poor (≤10). In linear regression analysis, a borderline significant linear trend of increasing quality over time was observed (r=0.11; p=0.075).…”

“…trials. [10][11][12][13][14] This review builds upon previous work by including interventions targeting a range of at-risk minorities as well as those evaluated in non-randomized trials, using a standardized metric to assess the quality of each study. Further, our review differs by limiting to interventions conducted directly within or linked to a clinical setting.…”

“…Wingood led the focus of Connely's TGP on powerlessness of AA women in sexual decision making [44][45][46]66]. Within sexual scripts of the AA women, there is a social standard where the power in the sexual relationship favors the male and inconsistent condom use is attributed to low sexual relationship power [16,49,51,53,59,60,65,[67][68][69][70][71], supporting a dynamic where the female is vulnerable to decisions made by her partner [51,64]. By making concerted efforts to better understand these social standards, researchers are better equipped to recognize diverse effects of social support and the vital role it plays in conceptualizing the influential power of the male gender on sexual risk among AA women [59,63].…”
